Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Born: 7 March 1944, UK

Sir Ranulph Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet, might have inherited a title and long ancestral history, but in 1972 the ex-SAS officer was earning a living writing and giving talks about his various adventures across the globe. In 1969, Fiennes had led a team up the White Nile by hovercraft, and in 1971 made the first north to south crossing of Canada by inland waterway. But in 1972, over a simmering pot of Irish stew in the kitchen of their London home, Fiennes’ wife, Ginny, suggested they attempt one of the most ambitious round-the-world adventures of all time: the first circumpolar navigation of the globe.
